ABOUT RAJKOT

The largest city of Saurashtra situated at 138 meters above MSL. Population of city is about 15 lakhs.  Rajkot is an peaceful & important city of Gujarat state. The city has a number of impressive colonial buildings and educational institutions.  Handicrafts like silver and textiles are a highlight of Rajkot, which has the National weaving institute which is working to promote traditional weaves. Here is large industries of oil engine. Rajkot is at center of  historical places of Saurashtra like Gir, somnath, Dwarka, Porbandar, Kuchchha etc.

HISTORY

History of Rajkot is about 400 year old. Rajkot state was established by Jadeja family of Jamnagar state after separation before years. During British rule, Carnal Catties  has established Rajkumar College in 1871to made available Cambridge education here to prices of states. Foundation stone of Lalpari irrigation scheme was put in 1895. Motor service between Rajkot ans Jasdan was started in 1920 and railway in 1922.. Rajkot municipality had provided electricity in 1924 and telephone office, post office established in 1925. After independence, Rajkot was Capital of Saurashtra state and First Chief Minister  was Hon'ble Uchhangrai Dhebar. Current Civil hospital building was the secretariats at that time.

PLACES FOR VISIT

The Gandhi  house  is  now  a  memorial  to  the Mahatma, the Rashtriya  shala  is promoting  his  love  for  handlooms  by  teaching  and  encouraging  various  kinds  of  weaving and  handicrafts. The prime  attraction is  Watson museum,  with  a  19th century  Victoria  memorial  statue, portraits  and photographs of  royal princes  of Saurashtra and European  dignitaries, historic  finds  and  architectural  fragments from  archeological  sites, dioramas  of  life  among  the  rural, pastoral  and  tribal people of  Saurashtra, handicrafts  and princely  relics. The prestigious Rajkumar College is also one of the prestigious educational institute. It was established in the British rule for educate prices and sons of British Rulers.Lakes  around Rajkot-Aji  dam, Nyari dam etc are pleasant  spots  for  picnics.

Rajkot is at the center of Saurashtra and has good connectivity with all parts of Saurashtra and Kuchchha as well as major cities of Gujarat & India by Air, Railway and Road.
Air : Rajkot is connected with Mumbai by Air route and daily flights are available
Train : Rajkot is approximately 250 km from Ahmedabad & connected with broad gauge railway with all major cities of India with direct trains. Broad gauge line is upto Porbandar via Jamnagar(75 km), up to Dwarka via Jamnagar, up to Veraval (190 km)  via Junagadh. A/C class, First class and second class accommodation available in most of trains.
Road : Rajkot is connected by road with all cities of Saurashtra, Kuchchha and Gujarat. National highway no 8-A is up to Porbandar. State Transport buses for all part of Gujarat is available and private buses are also available with comfortable and quick service.

WEATHER

Rajkot is situated in the middle of Saurashtra. Sea about 200 km away but there is hot summer in the city with temperature more than 40 to 45 degree Celsius some times. In the winter temperature is almost between 10 to 20 degree Celsius. Except some occasions, winter is generally pleasant but summer may be some times terrific. Rain season starts around  20th to 30th June and ends almost in October.
